Can Algae Discoloration Boost Your Business?

November 20, 2024

Turn Homeowner Aesthetic Concerns Into A Revenue Stream.

Dark streaks on asphalt shingle roofs are especially common in regions that experience hot humid weather. Most homeowners think these streaks come from dirt, moss, fungus, or tree droppings. In truth, they are often the result of algae.

Algae occurs naturally and, unfortunately, is transported through the air. That means it can collect and grow on roofs. The natural pigment in algae can gradually cause brown or black streaks on roof surfaces. Almost all types of roofing systems are susceptible to algae discoloration.

According to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, these streaks are unsightly, but they won’t damage a roof. According to the marketing minds at Marco, however, they could represent a business opportunity for the roofer looking to supplement their business.

If there is a high concentration of algae-stained roofs in your area, consider targeting those neighborhoods with custom messages about the aesthetic nuisance. Be sure to point out that the algae discoloration is not harmful to the roofs (you ARE the expert, after all), but that you can help.

Then, you can offer your services to lighten the algae discoloration on their shingles or even consult with them on a new roof from a shingle manufacturer that offers algae-resistant shingles that inhibit algae growth for extended periods of time.

The new roof sell will be much more difficult without an insurance claim, but you might be surprised to find roofs that are already in need of replacement or homeowners so unhappy about the streaks that they are willing to look into a new roof.

To lighten algae discoloration on customer’s shingles (not completely remove the discoloration, unfortunately), it’s typical to use a solution of water and bleach. Always contact the shingle manufacturer to learn their precise instructions for cleaning, including the appropriate mixture to use so that the shingles are not damaged, and any manufacturer’s product warranty requirements are met.

Using appropriate handling precautions, gently apply the cleaning solution on the roofing surface. Never scrub a shingle or use a high-pressure washing system as that can damage the roof, loosening or removing granules. After the appropriate amount of time (as determined by the manufacturer), gently spray off the cleaning solution with water and then properly handle and dispose of the rinse water.

If your calendar is full of roofing projects, count your blessings. If you have available slots, however, this could be an opportunity to fill that idle time. While it won’t pay the same as a new install, it’s better than nothing. And any time you can have your crew out working on a roof, that’s advertising for your company that could bring in the next project!
